What Is Whiplash (And Is It Really That Bad?)

October 18, 2016

Whiplash is one of the most frequently seen accident injuries. It can occur in low and high speed wrecks, and can result from car accidents , truck accidents , and motorcycle accidents . What is whiplash, and is it really a significant injury, or is it something accident victims use to get more money?

Whiplash Defined

Whiplash is specifically a neck injury . It occurs when the force of an accident “whips” the head back and forth, straining the neck muscles and vertebrae far beyond their normal capabilities in just a few seconds.

Is Whiplash a “Real” Injury?

Television, cartoons, and movies have created the misconception that whiplash is not an actual injury but rather an excuse to “get more compensation” in a car accident settlement. Even the other side’s attorneys and insurance companies will attempt to discredit a whiplash victim. However, whiplash is a very real injury. It produces very real symptoms, including:

How Is Whiplash Treated?

Whiplash may not be noticeable right after a car, truck, or motorcycle accident. This is why it’s so important to go to the hospital or see your doctor immediately after being involved in a wreck. A doctor can check for signs of whiplash and treat you before the symptoms worsen.

The initial treatment of whiplash is to stabilize the neck, usually with a neck brace. Treatment may also include pain medication and anti-inflammatory drugs. In some cases, chiropractic care can help “reset” the neck by getting the muscles and vertebrae back into alignment. Rest, ice, and sometimes muscle relaxers will also help reduce the discomfort of whiplash.

Prognosis

Typically, whiplash resolves on its own with proper medical care. In some cases, victims can be left with chronic pain and other symptoms that make life difficult. Whiplash generally isn’t life-threatening, but it can be life-changing.
