5 Tips to Make Driving in the Rain Safer

December 30, 2016

While most people assume that driving in snow and ice is more dangerous than driving in the rain, there are actually more car accidents that occur on rainy days than on days with other types of inclement weather. Here are five ways to stay safe on the roads when they are wet, and what you should do if you or a loved one were injured in a rain-related car crash.

1. Keep Your Headlights On

Some state laws require headlights to be on if your windshield wipers are on. Regardless of the law, having your headlights on when it is raining makes it easier for other drivers to see you.

2. Avoid Tailgating

Tailgating causes accidents, but when it’s coupled with wet roads, emergency stopping is much more difficult. Leave plenty of space between cars in case you have to hit your brakes. In the rain, you are more likely to hydroplane, skid, or not be able to stop in time.

3. Go Slower

Driving slowly in the rain is the best way to make sure you have as much traction as possible. When you drive too fast on wet roads, you increase the chance that you will hydroplane when coming to a stop or making a turn, thus increasing your chances of a car accident.

4. Don’t Hit the Brakes Hard

When you need to slow down, don’t automatically move your foot from the accelerator to the brakes. Instead, gently let off the accelerator until your car slows down to your desired speed. Hitting your brakes hard makes it more likely that you will lose traction on the road and crash.

5. Pull Over If You Need To

If the rain is coming down hard and fast, don’t be afraid to pull over and wait for the worst of it to pass. This ensures your safety and the safety of those around you.

If you or a loved one have been injured in a car crash on a rainy day, it’s easy to blame the road conditions. However, if someone was being negligent and not acting accordingly in the rain, therefore causing your accident, you may be able to recover compensation.
