5 Safety Tips for Pedestrians

July 1, 2017

Walking can be a great way to get from one place to another, or simply to get some much-needed exercise. However, walking on public roadways can be dangerous. Drivers owe a duty of care to pedestrians, to be aware of their presence and use caution when driving around them. However, many drivers are still negligent and cause pedestrians to become critically injured or even killed as a result. Here are some safety tips for pedestrians and what to do if you or a loved one were injured in a pedestrian accident .

1. Avoid Walking at Night

If you can, avoid walking at night altogether. Nighttime is when it is most difficult for drivers to see pedestrians.

2. Wear Bright or Reflective Clothing

Whether walking at night or during the day, it can be helpful to wear bright clothing or reflective clothing. This is particularly true if you must walk at night. Be sure to make yourself as visible as possible to drivers on the road so they can avoid you.

3. Don’t Walk Distracted

It may be tempting to answer that text or check your social media while you’re walking, but distracted walking isn’t much different from distracted driving . Keep your phone away until you come to a safe place. Stop away from traffic to check it.

4. Don’t Drink and Walk

While there’s no “DUI” charges for drinking and walking, being intoxicated when walking along the road can increase your chances of being hit by a car exponentially. You may not be able to hear a car coming as quickly as you would if you were sober and your reaction time may be slowed. Depending on your level of intoxication, you may be putting yourself at serious risk if you walk after drinking.

5. Use Crosswalks

Contrary to popular belief, jaywalking isn’t typically an acceptable defense to hitting a pedestrian. Nevertheless, it’s important that as a pedestrian, you use crosswalks or stay on sidewalks when it is possible for you to.
