5 Facts About Pedestrian Accidents

May 09, 2015

Although any type of car accident  can be serious, accidents that involve pedestrians are often more so.

Pedestrian accidents can be particularly devastating because their bodies are completely exposed to the motor vehicle. This can lead to significant injuries and even death.

Here are five facts about pedestrian accidents and what to do if you or a loved one were involved in a pedestrian accident:

1. Over 4,000 Pedestrian Accidents Happen in the U.S. Every Year

In 2011 alone, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that there were 4,432 pedestrians killed in motor vehicle accidents. Of those, 63 deaths occurred in the state of Indiana. However, the number of pedestrians injured every year is significantly higher, exceeding 76,000 individuals.

2. 20% of Pedestrian Deaths Are Elderly Individuals

The CDC estimates that persons over the age of 65 make up as much as 20% of all pedestrian accident deaths. In 2012 alone, elderly individuals accounted for 9% of all pedestrians injured.

3. Almost Half of Pedestrian Accidents Are Alcohol Related

Unfortunately, alcohol has been demonstrated to be a significant factor in pedestrian accidents.

The CDC estimates that in 48% of all pedestrian accidents, alcohol was a factor for either the driver of the motor vehicle or the pedestrian. In cases where alcohol was found to be involved, 34% of pedestrians who died as a result of the collision were found to have a BAC greater than 0.08%, and 14% of drivers were found to have a BAC greater than 0.08%.

4. Pedestrians Can Take Action to Help Prevent Accidents

There are numerous things that a pedestrian can do to help reduce the chances that they will be struck by a motor vehicle.

Pedestrians should avoid walking at night when possible, and wear reflective clothing if walking after dark is necessary. Pedestrians should avoid walking after drinking and should always cross at designated intersections and crosswalks.

However, pedestrian accidents can still occur even when an individual takes many precautions to prevent an incident.

5. Drivers May Be Held Responsible For a Pedestrian Accident

If a pedestrian accident occurred as a result of the negligence or carelessness of the driver of the motor vehicle, he or she may be held legally responsible for the damages. A personal injury suit may be brought forward in order to petition the court to be awarded compensation for:
