How to Avoid Winter Car Accidents

Jan 21, 2016

Driving in the winter on slick and snowy roads can be tough, and it often leads to accidents. While staying home is ideal when the winter weather gets bad, if you have to get out, there are many ways you can avoid a car accident. Here’s how.

1. Give the Person In Front of You Plenty of Room

When the roads are slick, you can’t slam on your brakes. Not only will you not be able to stop, you’ll likely lose control of the car and start to slide or spin. If you are driving behind someone, make sure to leave plenty of room between their tail end and your front end so you can come to a stop very, very slowly. Tap your brakes gently or let off the gas to come to slow, easy stop.

2. Reduce Your Speed

One of the biggest contributors to winter car accidents in Indiana is people who drive too fast for the conditions. While going 15 mph may seem frustrating when you have somewhere to be, driving slowly significantly reduces the risk of getting into an accident.

3. Don’t Slide Through an Intersection

Because stopping is more difficult on icy or snowy roads, many people try to slide through an intersection instead of coming to a full stop. This is a large contributor to winter accidents, and it’s important that you come to a slow but steady stop at an intersection. Similarly, don’t gun the gas when you get ready to move forward. If you do, you might spin your tires or lose control of the car. Instead, gently give your car some gas and move slowly through the intersection after your stop.

What to Do If You’re Involved in a Winter Car Accident

Despite taking as many precautions as possible, many people still end up in winter car accidents in Indiana. If you or a loved one have been hurt in an accident caused by another driver on icy roads, it is important that you get medical help and contact an experienced car accident lawyer as soon as you can. While the weather played an important role in the cause of the accident, drivers are still responsible for what happens when they are behind the wheel of their car.
