5 Motorcycle Safety Tips You Never Want to Ignore

Feb 14, 2016

While riding a motorcycle can be exciting and exhilarating, it can also be very dangerous. Motorcycle accidents are far more likely to result in serious injuries than car accidents. However, if you take safety precautions when riding, you can reduce the risk of getting into an accident and being critically injured in such an accident. Don’t ignore these 5 imperative motorcycle safety tips.

1. Wear a DOT Approved Helmet and Eye Wear

Although Indiana does not require motorcycle riders over the age of 18 to wear a helmet or protective eye wear, it’s something every motorcycle rider should still do. Helmets significantly reduce the risk of deadly brain injuries  in the event that you are involved in a crash.

2. Sharpen Your Motorcycle Skills

If you are a beginning rider, it’s important that you take a class and learn how to ride safely on Indiana’s roadways. However, seasoned riders can also brush up on their safety and driving skills by attending a class. Always having safety at the forefront of your mind can go a long way to preventing accidents from ever happening.

3. Always Ride a Bike That Works for You

Not every motorcycle rider can handle every type of motorcycle. If you find that your bike is big, hard to handle, or hard to balance, you increase the risk of an accident. When you purchase a bike that you can comfortably handle, you can enjoy the sport even more.

4. Give Cars and Trucks Plenty of Space

Unfortunately, many car and truck drivers fail to be aware of motorcyclists, even though they have the same rights to the road. Avoid weaving in between cars and trucks quickly and give them plenty of space. Even though your vehicle is smaller, you should still obey the laws of the road as you would if you were driving a car or a truck.

5. Don’t Ride in Bad Weather

Although it seems like common sense to avoid riding a motorcycle when the weather is bad, many people still do. Not only are you exposed to the elements on a bike, you’re at a higher risk of skidding on a wet or icy road when the weather conditions aren’t good. If you have to drive in bad weather, use a vehicle that is appropriate for the conditions at hand.
