3 Irresponsible Truck Driver Behaviors That Can Lead to Accidents

February 28, 2016

Truck accidents tend to be more serious than car accidents because of the sheer weight and force behind a truck. Semi-truck accidents have a high probability of causing severe injuries and in many cases, death. While operating such a large vehicle is undoubtedly difficult, there are some irresponsible truck driver behaviors that are known to lead to accidents. Here’s what you need to know and what options you have if you or a loved one were hurt in a truck accident.

1. Failure to Reduce Speed in Work Zones

Work zones have a reduced speed limit for a reason — often, there are workers and vehicles in the area that pose an increased risk of an accident. When a truck driver fails to reduce their speed in a work zone or a construction zone, they may rear end the car in front of them or even hit a worker.

2. Failure to Be Aware of Blind Spots

A truck cannot always see vehicles that may be sharing the roadway with it. If a vehicle is in a truck’s blind spot — such as right behind the truck or just behind the side mirrors — the truck may not see it and cause a crash when attempting to turn or change lanes. A truck driver must always be aware of the cars around the truck and exercise caution when a vehicle may be in a blind spot.

3. Failure to Adjust Accordingly for Bad Weather

While icy or wet roads are dangerous for all vehicles, they can be even more detrimental for a truck that is going too fast. Excessive speed on an icy road can cause the driver to lose control, and the resulting crash is much more likely to be serious or even fatal. Truck drivers should adjust their driving behaviors for the weather accordingly, even staying off the road when the weather is particularly unfavorable.
