Gathering evidence after a car crash

May 27, 2020

It is imperative for the victims of catastrophic accidents caused by reckless drivers to firmly stand up for themselves in court and gain access to all resources that are available. In order to strengthen one’s case, gathering evidence is crucial.

Unfortunately, some car crash victims do not understand the importance of gathering evidence at the scene of the crash (and afterward), while others are not able to do so as a result of serious injuries.

Taking pictures

For starters, it is essential to take photographs at the scene of the accident (if possible). Many people carry phones with cameras and victims who cannot take pictures themselves benefit from having friends, loved ones or others take pictures for them. Those who have the ability to use a camera or their smartphone need to gather photographic evidence of the crash from multiple angles and look for details such as skid marks, traffic signs, the locations of each vehicle and other aspects of the accident. Moreover, it is helpful for victims to have clear pictures of the vehicles involved.

Contact information and police reports

Aside from pictures, victims also need to gather relevant information such as the other driver’s license plate number and, if possible, their driver’s license and other personal information (such as their residential address). Moreover, it is important to obtain contact information from witnesses. If law enforcement officials responded to the accident, make sure you obtain a copy of the police report since this will provide you with critical evidence to strengthen your case.

Our law firm realizes how tough it is for many victims to gather evidence after a crash, but this is a crucial step when it comes to standing up for oneself. Browse through our blog for more on  traffic crashes .
