Beware of Summer Car Accidents

During the summer, there are more high school and college drivers on the road. Not only does the increased traffic add to the prevalence of car accidents, teen and young adult drivers tend to be more distracted and less experienced behind the wheel.

Summer is the perfect time of year for construction workers to begin road work, which can contribute to the number of accidents by making it difficult for drivers to navigate in areas where construction workers, signs, cones, and heavy equipment is present. Changes in the overall flow of traffic can be confusing for drivers, leading to unexpected crashes.

The summer heat can wreak havoc on a car, particularly the engine and the tires. Tires may blow out more easily when they are too hot, and an engine can overheat if a driver isn’t careful. Tire blowouts can cause serious wrecks, and drivers who pull over to the side of the road due to engine overheating are more at risk of being hit by another driver.

Many people vacation in the summer, travelling long distances to get to their destination. This means highway traffic is increased, and highways and cities become more congested than usual. Drivers who are unfamiliar with the area may drive unpredictably or may be distracted by looking at their GPS or a map for directions.

Although winter driving can be dangerous when road conditions are less than ideal, don’t assume that you’re safer in the summer. Be aware of the dangers that are specific to summer driving and stay vigilant on the road.
